Overture to William Tell  by  Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868)

"Jetzt Schctzchen, jetzt sind wir allein" (duet) and

"O, war ich schon mit ihn verieint" (aria) from Fidelio

by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Act 1 of Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, opens with this charring duet between Marzellina, the daughter of the jailkeeper, and Joaquino who works at the jail. Joaquino wants Marzellina to agree to get married, but she is in love with "Fidelio", a young man who has recently come to work at the prison. "Fidelio" is actually Leonora, the wife of one of the prisoners, who is trying to find information about her husband. Following the duet, Marzellina is left to her thoughts, where she fantasizes about being married to "Fidelio".

"Abscheulicher" from Fidelio  by

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)

Leonora has just overheard that her imprisoned husband is to be executed, now gives vent to her feelings in the highly dramatic recitative: "Abscheulicher! wo eilst du hin!" ("Accursed one! Where hasten’st thou!"); followed by the beautiful aria, "Komm Hoffnung" (Come, hope!), a deeply moving expression of confidence that her love and faith will enable her, with the aid of Providence, to save her husband’s life.
